1. Don’t create new words
Some translators are fond of creating new words, if they couldn’t find the suitable Chinese vocabulary immediately. This translation way makes the reader easily confused!
Translator should know the most important also the basic principle of translation is building comprehension between two languages. When there’s really no way to find an equal word, the first choice is doing explanation, not creating a new word.
2. Don’t be lazy of doing research
Translators are not all knowing. It’s very normal to meet new concepts in your task. In this situation, a good translator shouldn’t be lazy of doing certain research.
Of course, it costs time to look for dictionary or essays in order to comprehend the new concepts. It’s much easier to translate these concepts word to word without understanding them exactly. However, a good translator should educate himself forward with his experience.
3. Check, check and check again
Every translator does check their work, but a good translator will check it again and again – at least three times. There are three questions you should always keep in mind, while you’re checking your translation-
· Can I still improve some points?
· Can my readers understand everything I translated?
· Is there any typing errors?
After all, let your friends read it and get feedbacks.
